Adventures of a Not-So Gamer
Let me get one thing straight. I’m not a gamer.
Like, I’m always down for a game of Smash Bros (I’m best at Melee and the new one, but that doesn’t mean I’m good), or a good old fashioned game of Mario Kart, but chances are… I’ll lose valiantly.
That being said, I absolutely love the Legend of Zelda. The music. The art. The storytelling. It’s beautiful. So beautiful that I’ve never minded watching people play it. I’ve watched my older brother play Twilight Princess, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and Wind Waker. I’ve watched my younger brother play Breath of the Wild. I’ve watched… Chuggaaconroy play Majora’s Mask and Wind Waker (as well as Super Mario Sunshine, but that’s not the point of this post. Also, I remember when everyone was like… begging him to reveal his face? Those were wild times, man).
Long story short, I love Zelda, but have never finished a game myself.
That doesn’t mean I haven’t tried. Things just always happen that send me back to square one.
For example, I’ve started Wind Waker… more times than I can remember. I would start a game, then forget about it for months at a time. When I’d go back to it, my profile would have been written over, or accidentally deleted… so I would start another game. Then forget about that too. This cycle has been going on my whole life. I’ve made it through the Tower of the Gods so many times, I can practically play through that point in my sleep.
I’ve only made it farther than the Tower of Gods once. I made it through both of the Temples. I felt legendary. That was this summer.
And then I got my own GameCube. And my own memory card. I decided to quit my game on my mom’s memory card and use my own.
Big mistake.
I made it through the Tower of the Gods again with ease. And then I moved. Something happened.
When I got my GameCube, I vaguely remember getting two memory cards: a slightly transparent purple one, and an opaque white one. I believed I started my Wind Waker playthrough on the purple one, but now that I’m in my new place, I can’t find a single trace of it.
The white one has no trace of my game.
I was devastated. So much so that I decided to put Wind Waker on the shelf for a while… at least until I completely unpack my new place and either find the purple memory card, or realize that it never existed. If it comes down to it… I’ll start Wind Waker again. I will beat that game one of these days!
In the meantime, I decided to start Twilight Princess (my older brother scored me a copy of it for Christmas and AHHHH).
I have not played very much of Twilight Princess, but oh boy do I love this game. I’ve watched my brother play bits and pieces of it, and I’m honestly so stoked to be playing it myself.
After much deliberation, I named my profile (aka Link) My Child. You would be surprised how comforting it is to have all of the NPCs address you so kindly. I’ve used the same name for my last couple of Wind Waker profiles. I also decided to name Epona—wait for it—Horsey. I feel like a kid who needs his plushy with him at all times. It is incredible.
I haven’t been able to play much, due to my busy work schedule, but yesterday I completed my first dungeon, and I get to go back into the Twilight Realm the next time I play. I’m having so much fun with this!
I’m also determined to… you know… actually finish this game? In any case, please wish me luck, my friends. I might need it!
Do you like Legend of Zelda? If so, what is your favorite game? If not, what is your favorite videogame?
