Campus Encounters
Living on a college campus is fascinating. Everyone there is just coming into their own; each person has their personality (mostly) set, yet very few college students actually know what they are going to do with their lives. There is a constant, awkward dynamic between everyone as each person tries to figure out what exactly they are doing. This makes for some entertaining (and sometimes adorable) encounters between friends, acquaintances, and strangers.
The Tale of Two Unicycles
Towards the end of last week, I was walking past the Student Center, and a guy rode past me on a unicycle. A quick glance ahead of me told me that there was another dude on a unicycle. So, here’s the thing: I see a lot of skateboards, longboards, pennyboards, hoverboards, bikes, and scooters, but unicycles are pretty rare. To see two people, in the same moment in time, riding a unicycle is mind boggling. The presence of two unicycles, however, was not what caught my attention.
When these two guys saw each other, they both immediately paused and got off their unicycles (a feat of which I will never understand! They were both so graceful!). After a moment of staring at each other, one guy leaned forward, his hand outstretched, and introduced himself.
There was so much joy on both of their faces, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Just this moment, where two guys put themselves out there because of something as simple as a common interest (in this case, unicycles), where they otherwise might not have, was just striking.
Do with this information what you will, I just found it fascinatingly human and I loved it.
