Escape Room
This Post is Spoiler Free!
Alrighty. I just finished Escape Room by Maren Stoffels, which is a wild change of pace from The Trials of Apollo series by Rick Riordan, aka my last read. It is a really quick read, at roughly 200 pages (that are all fast paced, and a lot of pages only have a paragraph or so on them). Let me give you a really quick run-down on how this book is set up.
Escape Room is written in first person point-of-view from the perspective of multiple characters. It is also written in present tense, which is less common in the type of books that I usually read (fantasy, sci-fi, dystopian, and sometimes general fiction). I don’t know how common it is in the horror/thriller/suspense genre. I have read next to none of those types of stories. When I googled it, Google claims that Escape Room is Horror Fiction, but that doesn’t seem right. I don’t know much about Horror, but this book doesn’t seem to have a lot of the tropes that I’ve come to associate with Horror. If I were to make a guess, I’d say it’s Suspense or Mystery or Thriller? I know next to nothing about these genres. BUT! Moving on!
As I mentioned before, this book switches POVs between multiple characters. It was a little off-putting because a POV switch happened nearly every other page… The longest amount of time it stayed in a single POV was 8 pages. While I normally like to spend more time in the heads of each of the characters that I’m reading about, it worked for this book. Because of the constant change, the book is quick paced. I think the quick pacing is what drew me into the story.
The biggest problem was that sometimes the pacing was jarring, and not in the, “This is a dark and creepy story!” kind of way. I think that maybe some of the darkness was lost because of the slightly choppy pacing. Ah, but oh well.
Story wise, I don’t have any strong emotions. While reading, there were a lot of times I felt bad for the characters. There were a few times when I felt proud of the characters. But overall, I didn’t exactly feel changed by the characters.
It is an interesting read, though. If the book were longer, I’d probably not read it again, but as it is, it is short enough where I might give it another go one day, especially if I get more into the creepy side of literature!

I appreciate it. Fortunately, the book I read after this one was The Picture of Dorian Gray, and it was incredibly intellectually satisfying 🙂

This sounds like my type of book, I like when they’re short. I don’t know how I’d feel about the constant character switching though. I love to get to know the characters I read about.
Great review 💖
