Let it Snow
This Post is Spoiler Free!
I’m reading Let it Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle right now. It is split into three sections, one section/story per author, each with a different Main Character. I figured I’d write down quick thoughts of each story as I go along, and finish it off with thoughts on the book as a whole at the end! Here we go!
The Jubilee Express by Maureen Johnson
Mmm… what to say about this one. For one, it was super easy to read. At 117 pages long, it is definitely possible to read it in one sitting. It took me about an hour. So yes, the narration style was easy to follow and easy to comprehend. Another good note was that it was filled with late 2000s slang and technology (as it was published in 2008), so that brought on a whole level of nostalgia for me. I may have been young in that time, but the era of iPods and flip phones and the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows… that was when a lot of my current personality was developed.
On another nostalgic note, one of the characters has a Christmas Village on top of the family piano, and that’s what MY family does with our piano every year. It made me happy!
The only thing I didn’t particularly like was that the Main Character was very, “I’m not like other girls!” It’s a very common trope, one used a lot about 10 years ago, and it grated on my nerves. On top of that, she felt a little flat and not fully developed. But really, other than that, I enjoyed this story!
This story embodied a, “Prince Charming to the rescue,” type of romance!
A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle by John Green
So… this one had some of that, “She’s not like other girls!” crap in it too. But! This time it was from a male’s perspective! Aha, oh well. I survived, even if I found it annoying.
The other thing I wasn’t fond of was the very last page. It ended, and then there was an epilogue thing that was more infodump than anything else. I see why it was added, but I didn’t like the way it was added/written.
Just like the one before, this story was incredibly easy to read. It’s just under 100 pages. Definitely a one-sitting type of story. I will say, however, that it read less like the books I’m used to (even the contemporary ones), and more like… fanfiction, if fanfiction was commonly written in a first person POV. In any case, it was basically pure fanfic fluff. It’s so fluffy, and if the characters had been named after literally any other popular fantasy-type series or whatever, I would have 100% believed that it could have been published on a fanfic site.
I have no problem with that. None at all. I just thought it was entertaining. Really, the story itself was entertaining. All in all, it was a decently fun read.
This story embodied a, “Friends to lovers,” type of romance!
The Patron Saint of Pigs by Lauren Myracle
I think this one was my favorite of the three. Part of the reason might be that there wasn’t any of that, “Not like other girls!” stuff. It was relieving. As with the two above, this story was super easy to read. The Main Character got on my nerves a couple of times (as did one of her friends), but she is the one who went through the most character development, so I actually ended up liking her quite a bit. She seemed to grow more than any of the previous characters!
Also, all of the characters from the previous stories made an appearance, and it was actually super fun to see how their stories wove together! I definitely liked it. This last story was a little bit longer, but I still read it in one sitting, and enjoyed it the entire time.
This story embodied a, “Established relationship (angst with a happy ending),” type of romance!
The Whole Book!
I’m going to keep this super brief, as I just talked about each section individually, but I want to say that I ended up enjoying this immensely. The way the stories were woven together was so much fun, and I really, truly liked how it ended.
I also liked how each story embodied a different type of Romance Trope. The Prince Charming to the rescue, the Friends to Lovers, and the Established Relationship goes through a rough patch. It was lighthearted and entertaining and cute. Sure, there were some things I didn’t like, but it also was a gentle, easy book to read.
If that’s what you’re looking for, I’d definitely suggest Let it Snow. Have you read it? If so, what are your thoughts? If not, what is your favorite Romance Trope?
