Book Review

My Favorite Peter Pan Retellings (and Some I Haven’t Read)

If you don’t already know, I absolutely love Peter Pan. So much. I’ll read ANY retelling, and gladly watch any movie. The first part of Once Upon a Time’s season three was Peter Pan themed, and it was my favorite storyline of the whole show. I just… love it.

So I’m here to let you know of some of my favorite retellings (I haven’t read nearly enough), and some that I hope to read within the next year or so!

Books I’ve Read:

Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson

This book follows Tiger Lily from Tinkerbell’s point of view. It deals with the struggles of learning to accept oneself as well the dangers of love and life as a whole. Honestly, it is one of my all-time favorite books. I’ve read it three times so far, and I know I’ll be reading it again!

Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell

This book is about a girl named Gwen who finds herself swept up in a dangerous game of life and death. Neverland itself is basically a character, and nothing is as it seems. I don’t remember too much about this book, if I’m being honest. Just bits and pieces. But I do remember really liking it, and I put it in the pile of books I eventually want to reread!

Everland by Windy Spinale

The first of a steampunk fairytale trilogy, the book follows Gwen (who is surprised with this name choice? Keeping the name Wendy without it being the EXACT same, and also not being as long as Gwendolyn) and her two younger siblings, Joanna and Mikey. This world is one where growing up means something unimaginable, and no one is safe. I’ve read Everland twice, and I recently bought the next two books in the series (Umberland and Ozland) which clearly follow along the ideas of different stories. All in all, I liked the first book, and I think I’ll like the last two!

Neverland by Shari Arnold

In this book, Livy struggles with the reality of life and death, and when she meets the mysterious boy named Meyer, her struggles only double. This book is a little sadder. I guess it could have been the mood I was in when I read it (I think I read it all in one sitting. Maybe two), but it felt heavier to me—giving me slightly conflicted feelings on whether or not I liked it. I think it was written well, though. I’ve yet to decide if I want to read it again.

Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson

It has been… an ungodly amount of years since I read the first book in this series. I remember REALLY liking it but it was also before my Peter Pan obsession hit. I think I didn’t continue the series simply because I didn’t have access to the rest of the books, and I always forgot to put it on my wish lists! I want to reread it and read the rest of the series, though. And, in any case, I absolutely LOVE the play!

Books I Want to Read:

The Neverland Wars by Audrey Greathouse

It’s a trilogy. Just look at the name! Enough said!

Never Never by Brianna Shrum

This one follows Captain James Hook, and literally anything that follows Hook has me… hooked.

Straight On Till Morning: A Twisted Tale by Liz Braswell

I love the idea of Twisted Tales (and by golly do I need to read the other ones that Disney has published). This book doesn’t come out until February, but boy do I want it!

The Child Thief: A Novel by Brom

This just sounds interesting… like it would be a great twist to the tale I already love.

Blood in the Water: The Lost Tale of Captain Hook (Scary Faerie Tales) by M. A. Kersh

Scary Faerie Tales? That sounds great. I mean, I haven’t read much in the way of… horror… or scary anything, but who wouldn’t want to start with a Peter Pan retelling? Seems like something I would definitely try!

If I’m being perfectly honest, I would gladly read any Peter Pan related book. I’m clearly a big fan! Are you? Have you read any of the books on this list? If not, would you want to do a buddy read with me?? Let me know!
