The Night Circus
This Post is Spoiler Free! Oh my. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I… honestly don’t know where to start with this book. On one hand, there were two things that bothered me a bit, enough to mention them here (obviously). But on the other hand, this book left me with such an intense feeling that I don’t even know how to describe, those two measly little things seem inconsequential. It’s all very confusing. I suppose I should write those two things down. They were the only things about this book that distracted me from the story and the magic. So maybe take them as a warning? Not to keep…

The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins
This Post is Spoiler Free! Oi! I just finished reading The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins comic/graphic novel (what is the difference? Anyone know?). It is based 100% on The Adventure Zone Podcast by Clint McElroy, Griffin McElroy, Justin McElroy, and Travis McElroy. The art of the comic is done by Carey Pietsch. Oh man that was a fingerful to type! Long story short… this COMIC WAS AMAZING!!! It was EVERYTHING I wanted! I don’t even know what else to say about it. The art is just perfect. All of the character designs are perfect (especially Taako—his character design is just *chef’s kiss*). The story is… well the same…

she felt like feeling nothing
This Post is Spoiler Free! Okay… So I recently impulsively bought she felt like feeling nothing by r.h. Sin (and yeah, that’s how the title and author name is capitalized on the cover because poetry). I wasn’t even at a bookstore. I was in a small little indie shop buying candles (I have a real candle buying problem I think… ). Long story short, I bought the book with the candles, and I read it. I like to give poetry books a shot every once in a while, even though I’m not the biggest fan of poetry (it’s a long story). This book was alright. I should have expected from…

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle
This Post is Spoiler Free! Let me just start this by saying that I am not a detective. I am fantastic when it comes to memory, but ask me to solve a riddle and I’ll be lost. I wish I were better, but alas, that is something I’ve just never been particularly good at. So… keep that in mind while I’m talking about The 7 ½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. It’s a Mystery book (hence the disclaimer above). I honestly really liked it, even with my lack of crime solving abilities. First things first, a lot happens in this book. And when I say a lot… I…

How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories
This Post is Spoiler Free! So. How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories by Holly Black is the newest addition to the world of The Folk of the Air (starting with The Cruel Prince). This new book is a novella about Cardan. I wasn’t planning on reading it this month (I had a set TBR and everything), but man oh man… I got my hands on it and couldn’t resist! I just HAD to read it! I’m so glad I did. It’s short (it IS a novella), but is everything I could have wanted from a book about Cardan. Unlike the original trilogy, which is told in first…

Artemis
This Post is Spoiler Free! Oh my. Where should I start with Artemis by Andy Weir? I think perhaps by saying that this book was incredibly entertaining. Honestly, it had Percy Jackson level sarcasm with adult (or, more… college) type humor. So it was right up my alley. Sometimes it was just a little too much—some people said it was a lot too much in the reviews I’ve read—but I still really enjoyed it. Oof… I just burned my chicken nuggets. Sad day. Sorry for the interruption, but my thoughts just got interrupted so I figured I’d extend the favor to y’all. But back to the review! So, I liked…

Romanov
This Post is Spoiler Free! I made the mistake of not writing down my feelings directly after reading Romanov by Nadine Brandes, and now it’s been almost a week and I feel lost. This has nothing to do about how much I liked the book, because I liked it a lot. I just finished it at three in the morning, fell directly to sleep, and didn’t have time to write my review when I woke up. And then I procrastinated. But, it’s Tuesday, my usual blog post day, and I figured I should really, really get to this. So, here I am! Talking about Romanov! To start, I want to…

2020 Wrap Up!
2020 has officially come to a close, and I thought I’d list out the books that I read this year. I’ll start with the three star reads, then the four star reads, and I’ll end with the five star reads. Each book will have a link to the book and the titles will be a link to my review of it. If it is a series, since I review series in the same post, the link will be the series name! If you want to know my rating system, click here! Three Star Reads The Girl the Sea Gave Backby Adrienne Young House of Salt and Sorrowsby Erin A. Craig…

We Are Okay
This Post is Spoiler Free! We Are Okay by Nina LaCour. I can’t even begin to describe what this book means to me. I read it sometime last year, I think in late October? I needed it then. I remember reading it all in one sitting (while I was at work one really, really slow evening). I cried a lot. Then all of the hockey guys came in and my makeup was a little streaked, but it was okay because that wasn’t the first time they had seen me in tears over a book and the hockey dudes were very understanding. I needed this book again this year, though for…

The Kingdom of Back
This Post is Spoiler Free! Okay. I just finished The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu. I need a second to compose myself (like, honestly, I’m still crying), so I’m going to give you a quick recount on how this book came into my possession. It’s not a very special story, but I had been walking through the shelves at Barnes & Noble, just chillin’ as one does, when I caught sight of it. The cover is so intriguingly beautiful, I nearly couldn’t set it down, especially after I saw it was by Marie Lu (I loved her Warcross duology) and was about Mozart’s sister. But… I had promised myself…

Let it Snow
This Post is Spoiler Free! I’m reading Let it Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle right now. It is split into three sections, one section/story per author, each with a different Main Character. I figured I’d write down quick thoughts of each story as I go along, and finish it off with thoughts on the book as a whole at the end! Here we go! The Jubilee Express by Maureen Johnson Mmm… what to say about this one. For one, it was super easy to read. At 117 pages long, it is definitely possible to read it in one sitting. It took me about an hour. So…

My Rating System!
I’ve been posting so consistently this month (on Tuesdays and Fridays), and I didn’t want to lose my momentum. The only problem is that I haven’t actually finished a book since Winterwood, so I’ve decided to finally write up something that has been on my mind for some time. I was looking through my Goodreads 2020 Challenge (I’ll write up more on that closer to the end of the year), and I realized the majority of the books I read, I rated either 4 or 5 stars. There are 5 books (out of 59) that I rated 3 stars. I didn’t rate a single thing below that. This isn’t to…

Winterwood
This Post is Spoiler Free! Y’all… I don’t even know how I’m supposed to write this. I just finished Winterwood by Shea Ernshaw, and OH MY GOODNESS! AHH! WHAT DID I JUST READ?!?!?!?!? There are so many emotions, my dudes. So many emotions. To start, I’m just in love with the way Ernshaw writes. It flows so beautifully and conveys such emotion, I found myself devouring it. I felt the same way when I read The Wicked Deep earlier this year (you can find my review of that HERE). Like The Wicked Deep, Winterwood was a Paranormal Fiction (with a healthy dose of Fantasy). I just… I don’t quite know…

One Way or Another
This Post is Spoiler Free! So… I don’t usually like YA Contemporaries. Great way to start out a review, right? You might be asking yourself why I even bother reading them if I don’t usually like them, and I have two answers for that question: 1. I appreciate any piece of writing as an opportunity to learn about the craft, and even if I don’t like the genre, there are bits of it I can incorporate into my own writing. 2. Sometimes I find a book I genuinely like. So far, the list consists solely of We Are Okay by Nina LaCour, Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, and now One Way…

Damsel
This Post is Spoiler Free! Hey! I just finished my first book of December. What book? Damsel by Elana K. Arnold! Let me start out by saying that this book is apparently marketed as a YA… That is so wrong. This book is incredible, but it is NOT for a YA audience. The themes in it are very adult, the descriptions are very adult, the emotions are very adult. Do I think the odd teen will read this and possibly appreciate it for what it is? Sure. Do I think teens should read this book? No… Early twenties, yes. Teens, no. I didn’t buy Damsel thinking it was a YA…

Piratica (I and II)
This Post is Spoiler Free! I’m going to be 100% honest with y’all… I forgot to write down my thoughts on Piratica by Tanith Lee before starting (and finishing) Piratica II. Normally, I’ll be fresh from finishing a book as I write my review (which is less an ordered review and more a slew of my thoughts and feelings), so this feels a little weird. Piratica But let’s look at Piratica. I’m going to start by saying that it took me nearly the whole month of November to read, however that was less because of the book and more because I was busy (and even when I wasn’t, my mind…

The Picture of Dorian Gray
This Post is Spoiler Free! Here’s the thing. I am not a fan of reviewing classics (it reminds me of school, which was a period in my life where I genuinely wasn’t loving reading or writing). But I’ve been reviewing every book I’ve read this year, so I will do the same with The Picture of Dorian Gray, though the review will be short. Basically, I read this book because I have a really close friend who shared the soundtrack with me and made me want to watch the movie, Dorian Gray with Ben Barnes (really, I’ll watch anything with Ben Barnes). The only problem is that I really, really…

Escape Room
This Post is Spoiler Free! Alrighty. I just finished Escape Room by Maren Stoffels, which is a wild change of pace from The Trials of Apollo series by Rick Riordan, aka my last read. It is a really quick read, at roughly 200 pages (that are all fast paced, and a lot of pages only have a paragraph or so on them). Let me give you a really quick run-down on how this book is set up. Escape Room is written in first person point-of-view from the perspective of multiple characters. It is also written in present tense, which is less common in the type of books that I usually…

The Trials of Apollo
This Post is Spoiler Free! The Hidden Oracle I’m going to keep this short because it is a five book series and I don’t want this post to go on foreeeeeeever. So here we go. The Hidden Oracle, book one of The Trials of Apollo (ToA) by Rick Riordan. It is the third and final series in the Percyverse—Percy Jackson and the Olympians (PJO – five books) and The Heroes of Olympus (HoO – also five books) came before it. This review will most likely contain spoilers for PJO and HoO, though nothing too big. Just character names and possibly relationships (that would be impossible to avoid if you ever…

Spoiled… How Rotten!
This Post Does NOT Contain Spoilers! Is it obvious that I’m a little salty about a spoiler I came across? Let me give you some background. So, I’m pretty good about staying away from spoilers. I somehow managed to only have ONE thing from the Avengers franchise spoiled, and I couldn’t tell you anything at all about the new Star Wars movies (I’m not joking… I’ve stayed so far away from it that all I know is the name Rey and that Adam Driver plays a bad guy and has a lightsaber that looks like a sword). I do this for a reason. I. Can’t. Stand. Spoilers. I will say…

Circe
This Post is Spoiler Free Y’all. Circe by Madeline Miller. I love it so much. That’s it. That’s the post. Okay, no. I have to say a little more about it! Honestly, it was such a beautiful read; the way Miller crafts her stories is incredible. Last year I read The Song of Achilles, and I loved it. I had a coworker tell me to read Circe during a few of our many discussions about books. I am a little ashamed to say it took me nearly a year to take his advice and start Circe, but I am glad I waited. I think I needed to read it right…

The Lost Wonderland Diaries
This Post is Spoiler Free! Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in return for an honest review Hello, my friends! Today, I am reviewing The Lost Wonderland Diaries by J. Scott Savage, and let me just say… I absolutely loved it! This book reminded me why I love Middlegrade/Juvenile Fantasy (seriously, I’ve been so stuck in the world of YA this year, I had genuinely forgotten about my favorite genre). There is a simplicity that comes with this genre that no other genre can capture—A magic that isn’t tainted by the tragedy of growing up and instead opens up a realm of possibility and…

The Kyoshi Duology
This Post is Spoiler Free! The Rise of Kyoshi Ahhhhhhhh!! I have so many feelings! Everyone, strap in because this is going to be a wild ride. This book was AMAZING! I can’t even describe how absolutely, mind-bogglingly, horrendously incredible this book was. I’m very aware that I’m 100% fangirling right now, but this book deserves it. This book deserves it so much. Let’s start with the formatting. F. C. Yee somehow managed to make reading this book feel like you were watching either Avatar the Last Airbender (ATLA) or The Legend of Korra (KORRA). Each chapter was titled, short and simple, like the episodes would be titled, and even…

Brass Carriages and Glass Hearts
This Post is Spoiler Free! Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in return for an honest review Okay. If you follow my blog or my Instagram at all, you’ll know that I’m not one for reading Romance books. They tend to get on my nerves, and so I usually don’t even attempt to read them. On occasion, I’ll give one a try if it comes highly recommended. However, that being said, there is one author that I will read without a recommendation, despite the genre of her books. That author is Nancy Campbell Allen. Have I read all of her books? No. I can…

Ella Minnow Pea
This Post is Spoiler Free! GUYS! THIS BOOK! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I am legitimately shaking right now. Or bouncing. I’m not sure which. Maybe it’s my brain that is shaking? I don’t even know. All I know is that Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn is now my new favorite book. It is a book I will cherish for the rest of my life. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!! This is going to be more of a fangirling session than a proper book review, but who cares? I certainly don’t. This is my blog, and I will get as excited as I please on it! Okay so here’s the deal. I picked this…

The Blood of Stars (Duology)
This Post is Spoiler Free! Spin the Dawn So… Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim. Where to start? Well, I suppose I’ll start with the first chapter. It was interesting because the first chapter was backstory and nothing else. It almost felt like an extended prologue, but less mystical? I’ll be honest, this is the only book I can remember reading that started like that, and I actually found it useful. When the story started in the second chapter, I already liked the characters well enough and was eager to continue. Unfortunately, that eagerness didn’t remain—somewhere in the first half of the story, I got super bored. To the point…

Fahrenheit 451
This Post is Spoiler Free! Okay this book was fascinating. I can see why it’s considered a classic. It’s the type of book that I don’t particularly want to review because I’m honestly not sure I can review it. So instead, I’ll share a list of reasons why you might want to pick it up: The language of it is beautiful. And super interesting. Between literary quotes, sentences that leave you breathless, and the occasional bout of stream of consciousness writing, the language really offers up many things for a lot of different people. It’s fairly short and to the point. It doesn’t try to push the meaning on you…

And I Darken (Full Trilogy)
This Post is Spoiler Free! And I Darken Oh my goodness. And I Darken by Kiersten White. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I don’t even know how to explain what I’m feeling right now. I don’t even know what I am feeling. This book is amazing! I won’t lie, it was daunting at the beginning, but it was so artfully crafted that whenever I picked it up, I didn’t want to put it down. Seriously. I have no idea how on EARTH Kiersten White managed to put this together, but I’m amazed. She has definitely made it onto my “Favorite Authors” list! Seriously, my mind is a mess right now. At first, I loved…

The Girl The Sea Gave Back
This Post is Spoiler Free! Alright. Bear with me here. I have mixed feelings about The Girl The Sea Gave Back. There were parts about it that I absolutely loved, but there were also parts that nearly made me put it down, which is a bit rare. I honestly think that if I were the DNFing (Did Not Finish) type, this book would have been one of them. BUT! I hate leaving things unfinished, so I pushed through, and I’m not too upset that I did. I know… I’m going in circles… This is just how the book made me feel, okay? Let’s start with what I liked: the story.…

Sky in the Deep
This Post is Spoiler Free Fun fact: this is the second time I’ve read Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young. Fun fact number two: this is the second time I’m reviewing Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young, but the first time I reviewed it, it was less of a review and more of a discussion starter (it included spoilers too), so this doesn’t feel too redundant. Fun fact number three: it’s a pretty good book! I’m no stranger to rereads. I love them, though I’ll only do them with certain books. Sky in the Deep is kinda on the edge of that “certain book” line… or it was…

The Order of Time
Okay. I recently finished The Order of Time by Carlo Rovelli. It’s a nonfiction book, which I generally don’t read, but whenever there is anything concerning Time and Space, I find myself inherently interested. That being said, Science in any form is not my forte, so I think Time and Space are fascinating, but sometimes I get overwhelmed reading about either. Needless to say, I was a little nervous picking up The Order of Time, but curiosity got to me and I just had to dive in. Oh boy am I glad I did. This book is fascinating! Rovelli takes a deeper look into the idea of Time (and also…

9 From the Nine Worlds
This Post is Spoiler Free! Ah, I love Rick Riordan. I recently finished reading Magnus Chase: 9 From the Nine Worlds, which is a short story collection thingy in the Magnus Chase world. Each short story (there are nine of them) is from the perspective of a different character, including my two all time favorite characters, Heath and Alex! Each short story is connected by a little cameo from Thor, which is hilarious. Nothing is too intense. It’s just nine, lighthearted and fun stories told by the characters we all love (if you’ve read the Magnus Chase trilogy, that is). Seriously, give this collection a read. It’s fun and provided…

The Ascendance Trilogy
This Post is Spoiler Free! I recently read the Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer A. Nielsen. Because I’m a binge reader and read each book before managing to post the reviews, I’m posting them all together! The False Prince Oops. Apparently I only know how to read books in single sittings. I picked up The False Prince (book 1 of the Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer A. Nielsen), planning on reading a few chapters before bed. And I read the entire book… which apparently is my normal… Let me start by saying that I was first exposed to this book in the form of an audiobook roughly six years ago. Now, if…

The Legendary Shiver
Alright. I’m going to start this review with two disclaimers. The author sent me a free copy of The Legendary Shiver in exchange for an honest review. I’m generally not a fan of anything in the Romance genre. While this book isn’t outright Romance (it’s a Contemporary), there are a lot of Romance undertones. With that taken care of, let’s get onto the review! The Legendary Shiver by J. H. MacAl is a story about the pop music industry and all of the good and bad that comes with it. It follows William (Will) Cooper as he follows his best friend Ruby (Shiver) Magenta as she chases stardom. It was…

Wilder Girls
Let’s talk about Wilder Girls by Rory Powers. To put it simply, it wasn’t my favorite book of the year. I’m a little bummed, because I was really looking forward to it? But, such is life! I’ll be keeping this fairly short, but here are a few of my thoughts on the book. First off, I had a hard time following the plot. I don’t always mind that, since confusion can add a lot to a story, but everything twisted just a few too many times. I have to say, though, that with the constant changing and confusion, it was a fairly quick read. Just… instead of proper investment where…

Folk of the Air Trilogy
This Post is Spoiler Free! I debated breaking this up into three separate reviews, posting after I finished each book. However, I ended up reading the whole trilogy before I could post the first review, so I decided to group them together. I wrote each one after finishing the book in question, so you are getting unadulterated thoughts that I wrote (most of the time) after 2 in the morning! The Cruel Prince So. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black (the first book in The Folk of the Air trilogy). I read it in a day, which is unsurprising. I’ve heard many people say that they read this book quickly,…

The Starless Sea
Have you ever finished a book, stared at the last page for a moment too long, turned to scream into your pillow, then immediately opened the book again, starting from page one? Yeah, that was me with The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. It was another one suggested to me by a friend. Or yelled at me, I guess. The same friend who also suggested (yelled) that I should read Six of Crows. To be honest, I don’t exactly have the words to describe what I’m feeling right now (especially without giving spoilers… which I promise I won’t do), but I’m going to do my best. However good that may…

Reading Update (March and April)
Here’s the thing. It’s been about a month since I last posted, and it’s been two months since I last posted anything about what I’ve been reading. I can’t say I’ve read a LOT since then, but I’ve read a fair amount. The books I’ve read in the last two months (with mini reviews/thoughts) are: The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan It took me a while to get into this one. I think a part of that is because I’d been in YA land for so long that going back to Middlegrade was a bit of a shock to my system. The other part is simply… it…

Labyrinth
I just finished working on an album cover for Donovan Colton, and while it isn’t released yet, I just realized I haven’t properly shown the last album cover I did for him? So! Here we have it! This is probably the artwork that I am most proud of. It was done completely in Photoshop, and I spent hours, upon hours, upon hours on it, trying to make it the absolute best I could. I know for a fact that Donovan Colton also spent hours, upon hours, upon hours on this album. His music is an incredible work of art, and I am honored to be able to be a part…

Meet Nikolai!
I ADOPTED A KITTY!!!!!!!!!!! Yup. That’s my news. I was about to sit down and write about books, but then… kitty love took over. His name is Nikolai, based off of Nikolai Lantsov from Leight Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone Trilogy. I know he is in King of Scars (I mean… he IS the King of Scars, no?), but I refuse to read that book until the sequel comes out! In any case, my little Nikolai is precious. I absolutely love him. He has no concept of time. So far, he has been content with sleeping on my hands when I’m trying to write, and running around like a madman when…

The Wicked Deep
This post is spoiler free! One of the books I read recently was The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw. To put it simply… I picked this book up and didn’t put it down until it was finished. I didn’t even put it down to make my dinner! I held it in my left hand whilst stirring my pasta with my right! And when I finally did put it down (you know, after reading the last page), I stared off into space for a few minutes. The verdict? I loved this book. I mean, I’m holding a tiny grudge against it because it made me stay up past my bedtime, but…

Fangirl
So, here’s the thing. I recently finished Fangirl, and I wish I hadn’t. You might be thinking, “Wow, Lucy… was it that bad?” and the answer is an all caps NO! Fangirl was AMAZING! The only thing I didn’t like about it was that it ended at all. To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure what it is about this book that I find incredible. I didn’t notice any particular techniques, or character related things that stood out to me, but I think that might be because I was invested? It didn’t feel like a book to me. It felt like I was diving straight into the memories of a…

My Favorite Peter Pan Retellings (and Some I Haven’t Read)
If you don’t already know, I absolutely love Peter Pan. So much. I’ll read ANY retelling, and gladly watch any movie. The first part of Once Upon a Time’s season three was Peter Pan themed, and it was my favorite storyline of the whole show. I just… love it. So I’m here to let you know of some of my favorite retellings (I haven’t read nearly enough), and some that I hope to read within the next year or so! Books I’ve Read: Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson This book follows Tiger Lily from Tinkerbell’s point of view. It deals with the struggles of learning to accept oneself as…

House of Salt and Sorrows
I recently read House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin Graig, and it was the first Fantasy book I’ve read in a while that I thought was kind of… eh. Don’t get me wrong, there were a lot of things in the book that I liked (particularly in it being a retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses), but the ending didn’t sit well with me. When the ending is off, it throws off the whole book. However, let’s start with the beginning. Erin Craig sets the scene, and she sets it fairly dark and dreary. It took some time, and I had the smallest amount of trouble getting into her…

Was it a Dream… or a Nightmare?
I’ve always been a vivid dreamer. Like, really vivid. To the point where I can’t always tell what’s a real memory and what was just a really, really mundane dream. So when I woke up in the middle of the night, my dorm room dimly lit by the lamp just outside my window, I genuinely thought there was a young woman looming over me. Her skin was almost grey, though that easily could have been the low lighting, and her eyes were nearly glowing gold. She looked pissed, but in that cold sort of way where her jaw was tight and her lips were pressed into a thin line. Her…

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Well, ya girl has read another trilogy. Normally, I read Fantasy (with a little Sci-Fi and Contemporary mixed in), but this one… this one was YA Romance. I’m gonna mention that I’m not a fan of Romance as a genre. You might be asking, “Why did you even go for it, Lucy?” and the answer is, well, I don’t actually know. Maybe to try and get into the spirit of Valentine’s day (which is, if I’m being honest, far from my favorite holiday)? In any case, I don’t really like the genre, but this trilogy wasn’t bad. I’m talking about the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy, by…

Shadow and Bone (Full Trilogy)
If you’ve been following my bookstagram at all, then you know that I have recently found an intense love for Leigh Bardugo and her books. It started with Six of Crows, where I marveled at the way she built the world of the Grishaverse. It continued in Crooked Kingdom, where I cried over characters who weren’t good but weren’t bad—who were young and human and flawed and perfect. I continued my Bardugo journey with the Shadow and Bone Trilogy. And goodness gracious. I read all three books in just over two days. If I’m being honest, the plot of the trilogy wasn’t quite as polished as Six of Crows and…

Scratch Spins: What to Remember (Written by a Novice)
So here’s the dealio: scratch spins are a piece of work. What a way to start a post, eh? If you don’t know what a scratch spin is, worry not (I didn’t know what it was until about a year ago), and if you do know what it is… I mean… nice? A scratch spin is a staple spin in figure skating. It’s the first official spin you learn after going through the basics of two-foot spins and simple one-foot spins that get you more accustomed to spinning. Scratch spins take you from an awkward, slow wobble of a spin, to a really fast, really disorienting tornado. If you can’t…

Divan of Shah
Author Shah Asad Rizvi sent me a copy of his poetry book, Divan of Shah, in return for an honest review. Well, here it is! Let me start by mentioning that I don’t usually intake poetry via an entire book. Most of my experience with poetry has been focusing on a single poem, or maybe a small selection, at a time. That being said… I’ve read a lot of poetry, so I have a decent understanding about the way a lot of people write it—and the places people tend to get stuck. The biggest trap poets fall into is making their poetry incredibly dark and depressing. I’m not saying there…

Crooked Kingdom
This Post is Spoiler Free I finished Crooked Kingdom last night, and ow. It hurt, but goodness gracious it was worth it. That book was incredible. The whole Six of Crows duology was incredible. Leigh Bardugo is a genius—a brilliant writer and mystifying storyteller. My feelings about Crooked Kingdom are pretty similar to my feelings about Six of Crows (read my discussion here), in the sense where she employs the same writing techniques. Her descriptions are so in depth, that I felt like I was walking the streets of Ketterdam, and the way she utilizes flashbacks is just chilling. Both of these books felt alive. I lost track of time…

Life Update
Today, I just wanted to do a quick Life Update. It’s nothing big or special. Just kinda an overview of what has happened in the last week or so. As you may know, I moved out of my parents’ house and am now in a cabin. It’s honestly pretty big for me being the only occupant. I love it. There is enough space for my books! However, it is a cabin. An old cabin. So that… means bugs. I mean, it’s not that big of a deal. The biggest pest are ants, and boy are they a pest, but I’m heading to Walmart today to get some ant-killer. As for…

Six of Crows (but I… haven’t finished the book)
This post is spoiler free! Here’s the thing. I am just about to start part five of Six of Crows, beautifully labeled as “The Ice Does Not Forgive,” and I am nervous. I last read on Wednesday, less than forty-eight hours ago, but since then I’ve only had the odd half hour where I could actually read (because of work… laaaame), so I have gathered every ounce of self-control that I have in order to NOT pick up the book. The next time I read, I’m going to cease life until the book is finished. I need to make sure I have an adequate amount of time, because I do…

Adventures of a Not-So Gamer
Let me get one thing straight. I’m not a gamer. Like, I’m always down for a game of Smash Bros (I’m best at Melee and the new one, but that doesn’t mean I’m good), or a good old fashioned game of Mario Kart, but chances are… I’ll lose valiantly. That being said, I absolutely love the Legend of Zelda. The music. The art. The storytelling. It’s beautiful. So beautiful that I’ve never minded watching people play it. I’ve watched my older brother play Twilight Princess, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and Wind Waker. I’ve watched my younger brother play Breath of the Wild. I’ve watched… Chuggaaconroy play Majora’s Mask and…

2019 Wrap-Up
It’s the last day of 2019! I don’t have an extensive post planned, but I do want to go through a quick couple of bookish things! In this last year, I have no actual idea of how many books I read, but I do know that it wasn’t a… large amount. I struggled with finding the time to read, but at least I read a little? I kicked off the year with Sky in the Deep (you can find my discussion of it here). I liked the book a lot, even though there were a couple of things that didn’t quite sit right with me. I’ll definitely read it again,…

Things a Book Dragon Might Do in Winter
Winter has come. At least, it has for me. I actually just put together a competition for my work place challenging all of the corporate employees to spend as much time outside in the snow as possible. Anything active counts: Skiing, Snowboarding, Snow Shoeing, Sledding, Tubing, Ice Climbing, Ice Skating, Ice Fishing… the list goes on and on. Creating this competition made me realize that I don’t do much in the way of active winter activities (aside from ice skating, but I’ve never done that outside). I’m more of a bookish adventurer as opposed to a typical adventurer. However, that leads to some relaxing, fun, and… rather strange winter activities.…

A Beginner’s Guide to Writing Good Stuff
Writing, like any form of creativity, has pitfalls. We don’t notice them most of the time. We don’t think they are necessary to worry about. But when we see them in someone else’s writing, we cringe. Every writer has trouble with at least one of these pitfalls (and if they don’t, they are lying to themselves), and that doesn’t make anyone a bad writer. In fact, noticing and working on avoiding these traps makes you a better writer! The key is to notice them—to pay attention to your own writing as well as the writing of anything you read. So, I’m taking a moment to outline them. This isn’t an…

A New Beginning
The very first post I wrote for my blog, I wrote while sitting in my car, pulled off the side of some canyon road. It was towards the beginning of summer, and I was a little dehydrated but very happy. It’s only been a little over a year, but here I am again. Sitting in my car (a different car, but same make and model), computer on my lap, and empty water bottle beside me. It’s nearing the end of summer, and so much has changed in the last year or so. One of the things that has changed, is my blog name. When I first posted, I posted on…

Mirage
Warning: Spoilers ahead! Also… This is not a comprehensive review, just a quick spat of my thoughts. I recently read (as in, I finished it yesterday) Mirage by Somaiya Daud. It was pretty good, I won’t lie. I was relatively hooked. Unfortunately, it took me over a month to read. That wasn’t the book’s fault—more like… I was incredibly busy in the month of February, and I barely had time to even breathe, much less read. However, I did read it, and I did really like it. I thought it was going to be a one off… but hey! This just means I have to read more books! Let me…

Looking Forward to February
Let’s be honest… January went by far too quickly, and I wasn’t able to get nearly as much done as I had wanted to. That’s not to say it went poorly, or that I didn’t get a lot done (because it didn’t… and I did), but… Let me put it this way. I only read one book in January. The book I read was Sky in the Deep, and you can find my book discussion here Click here to get your own copy However, a really great thing about January is that I started a few projects that will be released during February. The first of these was actually released yesterday! Unpopular Opinions by Sol Hardy is…

Sky in the Deep
Warning: Spoilers ahead! Also… This is not a comprehensive review, just a quick spat of my thoughts. My latest read was Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young. I had started it like… a week ago? Read three chapters then put it down for who knows why. This morning I decided I wanted to read a chapter or two before getting to work… and I read the entire book. All 47 chapters. Also. I am fresh out of reading it, so my thoughts are a little incoherent. They might form up a little as I write, but we shall see. “The night sky was reflecting on the ice in crisp…

Living With Lucy
I’m finally doing it. I’m finally getting organized. This morning, I’ve been super productive. Ultra productive. The Lucy from last week is looking at me in awe!!! Through the start of the semester, it isn’t uncommon for me to take a little while to get settled, so having a week and a half of doing not as much as I should is…. understandable. But it is over! I’m finally getting back into my routine of getting up at 6:15 (in bed by 10) and getting to work by 6:30. By getting to work, I mean sitting down at my desk and opening my computer. I started off by writing (what?…

Neverland
Warning: Spoilers ahead! Also… This is not a comprehensive review, just a quick spat of my thoughts Over the last two days, I read Neverland by Shari Arnold, and now that I am armed with hot chocolate, I am ready to talk about it—just a little bit. I honestly can’t decide what I feel about this book. You know how there are books that are just so perfect, like… you needed to read it in that moment, and because you did you are sorta changed forever? But then there are the books that are just a little too much for you to handle: a feeling you’ve been feeling lately is…

Grace and Fury
Warning: Spoilers ahead! Also… This is not a comprehensive review, just a quick spat of my thoughts. Over this last weekend, I read the book Grace and Fury, which I received in an Owl Crate (I know, I know—gotta get my merch and stuff XD). If you follow my Instagram stories at all, you’ll know I had some moments in this book where I just… couldn’t. Let me talk about the title. I absolutely loved how at the beginning Serina was obviously Grace and Nomi was clearly Fury. They had their roles. It wasn’t a surprise to me that Nomi became the actual Grace and Serina was stuck in prison…

Campus Encounters
Living on a college campus is fascinating. Everyone there is just coming into their own; each person has their personality (mostly) set, yet very few college students actually know what they are going to do with their lives. There is a constant, awkward dynamic between everyone as each person tries to figure out what exactly they are doing. This makes for some entertaining (and sometimes adorable) encounters between friends, acquaintances, and strangers. The Tale of Two Unicycles Towards the end of last week, I was walking past the Student Center, and a guy rode past me on a unicycle. A quick glance ahead of me told me that there was…

July Prompt #15
Prompt: We all have original characters. Tell me the inspiration for one of them. How did they get their name? What do they eat for breakfast? My Writing: Let me tell you about Perdita (Perry) Stain. As cheesy as this sounds, she came to me in a dream. There wasn’t much to her: a light voice, brown hair, and a story to tell. I want to say the dream was like a movie I watched with my eyes half-open. I got to see Perry’s life and story, from the beginning to the end. I didn’t even bother checking the clock when I woke up. Instead, I grabbed the paper and…

July Prompt #8
Prompt: Dragons (In honor of Leo Valdez’s birthday… I know… it’s a day late) My Writing: Aerie let out a sigh and laid her head in her hands. She was supposed to be studying, pouring over the yellowed, slightly musty, archived books, but instead she was resting on them, breathing in the layers of dust that resided in her small corner. The library was the oldest building on campus, as it was the original school, before the major expansions in the 1600s. Despite the expansions, the most recent completed previously that year, the library also was, by far, the largest building on campus. Made of a warm, grey colored stone,…

July Prompt #3
Prompt: “Chin up, Princess, or else your crown will fall,” the lady in waiting said as she did up the back of the princess’s corset. “And you don’t want ‘Him’ to pick it up.” My Writing: “Chin up, Princess, or else your crown will fall,” the lady in waiting said as she did up the back of the princess’s corset. “And you don’t want ‘Him’ to pick it up.” Princess Amelia glared at the woman helping her, but stuck her chin up anyway, jutting it out with a bit of attitude. Eridora, the lady in waiting, let out a small laugh and tied off the back of the corset before…

July Prompt #2
Prompt: Describe or expand on the color blue in 5 different ways/scenes. My Writing: Her eyes are all you notice as she tells you to leave. Rimmed in the redness of her anger is her pain, the sorrowful blue that once was as crystalized and clear as her laugh but is now the dull color of shattered trust. Her voice breaks as her small hands beat against your chest, pushing you out of the room that you had shared together until you shared it with someone else. I see home in the way the mountains fade into the distance, the atmospheric blue making way to a vibrant green as I…

July Prompt #1
Prompt: One day you (a character of yours) discovered you can fly. How did you make this discovery? (In honor of Jason Grace’s birthday) My Writing: Many, in the recent months, have fallen prey to the charges of being a witch, but I never expected to become a victim. Yet, here I stand on the wrong side of Massachusetts’ fear and hatred, unable to see those who convicted because of the black cloth that mutes all my senses and traps the heat of my breath. The stillness is unbearable as I wait with a woven rope strung around my neck. I’m about to pay for a crime impossible to commit.…

Character Quirks
As a writer, my mind and hands are constantly working at world building and story crafting as I go through processes of brainstorming and note taking to fully flesh out details. However, when it comes to characters, I like to take it one step further. Have you ever heard of method acting? It’s when an actor will take on their role quite literally, embodying their characters traits and interests even when the actor is off the clock. If their character likes pink, the actor will start wearing pink clothing. If their character is a spin instructor, the actor will take spin classes and mimic the teacher, and spend most of…

Snippets of New York
You know that moment when the plane finally gets in the sky? You’ve just spent the last couple hours fretting about making sure you had everything packed, going through security (taking those heals or boots or easy flip-flops off), rushing to find your gate (sometimes even traveling the whole length of the airport before spotting the desired letter and number suspended over a doorway), waiting for too long to board the plane, feeling your heart drop when it’s mentioned that you have to check your bag because they don’t have room on the plane. Do they have room for you? Well.. yes, they have room for you, but it’s awkwardly…

The Story of my Mind
Let me start with welcoming you to my blog. You may have checked out my welcome page, or my about page, but if you haven’t… then… Welcome! My name is Lucy. I’m eighteen years old and am a GIANT book nerd. I love books Dragons are cool I’ve always thought bookworm sounds… weak or something? I don’t fancy being perceived as weak So I don’t call myself a bookworm This is the summer before my senior year of college. I’m currently attending Utah State University as an English Major with an emphasis in Creative Writing. Fitting for a bookdragon, yes? I think so. I’m writing this in my Miata, pulled…
