Book Review

Sky in the Deep

This Post is Spoiler Free

Fun fact: this is the second time I’ve read Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young. Fun fact number two: this is the second time I’m reviewing Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young, but the first time I reviewed it, it was less of a review and more of a discussion starter (it included spoilers too), so this doesn’t feel too redundant.

Fun fact number three: it’s a pretty good book!

I’m no stranger to rereads. I love them, though I’ll only do them with certain books. Sky in the Deep is kinda on the edge of that “certain book” line… or it was after I read it for the first time. The second time I read it, I liked it quite a bit more (though it took me longer to read; however, I think that’s only a circumstance of my life).

I think I connected with the main character a little more this go around, and that made a big difference. She is strong willed, yet beautifully human. We readers see her struggle both internally and externally, and that struggle is written SO WELL! Like!! AH!!!

Another thing that is written well (and if you’ve read my past reviews you’ll know this is important to me) is the description of pain and the longevity of injuries. So often in fiction injuries tend to occur, then just disappear with no trace. Oh boy is that not the case in this book. Characters get hurt and stay hurt. Sometimes adrenaline pushes them through the pain of their injuries, but it always catches back up to them and I love it. Way more satisfying to read than unrealistic portrayals of healing!

There were parts of the plot that I didn’t like the first time I read this, and I still didn’t really like those parts, but I think a part of that is simply just taste. In any case, it is a great book. Yes, there is quite a bit of violence (it is kinda a war book?), but there are also moments that are just so beautiful it lodges with you in your chest and refuses to leave.

Also, there’s a scene I REALLY WANT TO PAINT, but I’m honestly not sure if I have the skill to pull it off. Sigh… Maybe I’ll give it a shot, and maybe I’ll show y’all. We shall see!

Okay, here is fun fact number four: I originally decided to do a reread of this book because I am finally going to read The Girl the Sea Gave Back, a standalone book written in the same universe as Sky in the Deep. I don’t believe it was super necessary to do the reread, but I wanted to so I could get myself back into this world.
