Hello, my friends! Today, I am reviewing The Lost Wonderland Diaries by J. Scott Savage, and let me just say… I absolutely loved it! This book reminded me why I love Middlegrade/Juvenile Fantasy (seriously, I’ve been so stuck in the world of YA this year, I had genuinely forgotten about my favorite genre). There is a simplicity that comes with this genre that no other genre can capture—A magic that isn’t tainted by the tragedy of growing up and instead opens up a realm of possibility and growth. The Lost Wonderland Diaries was ripe with that magic. It was fantastic.
On top of that, the book gave a beautiful message of self worth. I’m honestly tearing up just thinking about it, and that’s not an exaggeration. If I’m on the edge of tears while writing this review, you can imagine how emotional I was while reading the book. So this book was both magical and tear-jerkingly beautiful.
It was wonderfully written. It was obvious that every aspect of the writing was carefully crafted. The descriptions were full, the trials the characters went through were fun and imaginative, and the characters themselves had some fantastic development. Even the way Savage messed with the POV was entertaining! I seriously loved everything about the writing. And there’s more! The presentation was entertaining. I don’t know about you, I absolutely love it when writers mess with form, or as Savage said in his Acknowledgements, “eccentric typesetting.” It adds a bit of spice and (dare I say) magic to the book!
So yes, I absolutely loved this book, and may have called my younger sister mere seconds after finishing it to tell her that she needs to read it. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a little slice of wonder in their lives.
This book came out in early September, so you can definitely pick it up now!
Just for kicks and giggles, I’m going to leave you with a quote from J. Scott Savage, which he wrote on Goodreads:
“I sort of want to give myself a 1 star review because upon reading my own book, I found that I was able to predict everything that would happen. But I really love Alice in Wonderland and loved writing this book, so I’d gladly give it a five star review. Then again, authors always doubt their own work so, that seems pretty high for me to give my own book. So, maybe I just won’t give it a star rating and instead say that I’m so glad I could share it with all my readers, and I hope you enjoy it!
Also, if you read it, make sure you read to the very, very, very end of the book. Like the very last page. It will be worth your while. ;)”
