Book Review

We Are Okay

This Post is Spoiler Free!

We Are Okay by Nina LaCour. I can’t even begin to describe what this book means to me. I read it sometime last year, I think in late October? I needed it then. I remember reading it all in one sitting (while I was at work one really, really slow evening). I cried a lot. Then all of the hockey guys came in and my makeup was a little streaked, but it was okay because that wasn’t the first time they had seen me in tears over a book and the hockey dudes were very understanding.

I needed this book again this year, though for different reasons. I didn’t know that I would need it when I put it on my December TBR. I didn’t know I would need it until almost a week before I read it. But… boy did I need it. I’m crying again, and this time I’m curled up in bed with Nikolai (my kitty) cuddled into my side. Nikolai is just as understanding as the hockey guys.

We Are Okay is… beautiful, to say the least. The way it is written is interesting. It alternates between the current story and the events leading up to it, which gives the readers a unique perspective on the whole thing. It also allows the readers to see the character development in a very stark way. And, because there are two timelines, you get to see the main character develop in two ways. It’s all very interesting and well written.

But it’s the emotions in this book that will leave an imprint on your heart. This is a story of grief, forgiveness, acceptance, and love, and those words do a really poor job of describing this book and the feelings it gives you, but I’m not sure how else to put it. It’s just… impactful.

It really is a book I’d suggest to just about everyone. I’ll admit, it’s heavy, but soothes you in the best, most loving way. I’ve read it twice now, and I know I’ll be reading it again. It has been there when I needed it most, and I’m sure it will be there for me in the future if I ever need it again.

Have you read We Are Okay? If not, what book has been there for you when you needed it the most?
