Book Review

Winterwood

This Post is Spoiler Free!

Y’all… I don’t even know how I’m supposed to write this. I just finished Winterwood by Shea Ernshaw, and OH MY GOODNESS! AHH! WHAT DID I JUST READ?!?!?!?!? There are so many emotions, my dudes. So many emotions.

To start, I’m just in love with the way Ernshaw writes. It flows so beautifully and conveys such emotion, I found myself devouring it. I felt the same way when I read The Wicked Deep earlier this year (you can find my review of that HERE). Like The Wicked Deep, Winterwood was a Paranormal Fiction (with a healthy dose of Fantasy). I just… I don’t quite know how to fully describe it, so let me spit out an inconclusive list of keywords: magical, haunting, beautiful, dark, cold, intense, and timeless.

It was written in a first person POV split between two characters (Nora and Oliver), with little sections that almost acted like commercial breaks, each a page or two long and written in a third person POV. I absolutely loved the POV switches between Nora, Oliver, and the third person narrator. It flowed really well, and really allowed for great storytelling and fantastic character development. Seriously, the character development was done so well, especially with Nora who, despite there being multiple POVs, was definitely the main character.

AND THE PLOT TWISTS! AHH! So here’s the thing. I kinda definitely knew that both of the big plot twists/plot reveals were going to happen, but I STILL WAS SHOCKED BY THEM! I DON’T KNOW HOW! Maybe I was less shocked and more just mind-blown over the whole book… but man was I stoked for those plot twists. They were so good.

This was one of those books where I was on the edge of emotions the entire time. The type of book that makes you stay up and read it. The type of book that when you finally convince yourself to put down because… responsibilities… it occupies a large space in your mind, making you want to go back to it even though you can’t. The type that you finish, and all of a sudden, you are crying and you don’t know why you are crying, so you just sit there holding it to your chest, trying to catch your breath.

Or, at least, it was that type of book for me. Whether or not you’ll have even remotely similar feelings, I don’t know, but I HIGHLY recommend this book. 10/10 will read again! Have you read Winterwood? If so, how did you like it? If not, do you want to?
